For the community of Al Malikiya in north-eastern Syria, jaré is a memory loaded with emotion. In the country, on hot nights, Assyrian families used to sleep on the roofs of their houses in a large bed that they built together. Their gestures are almost choreographed, reminiscent of a ritual. The video installation Jaré reactivates this memory belonging to the collective memory of this community, idealizing a disappeared land, which doesn’t really belong to them. It is accompanied by an immersive sound piece mixing snippets of testimonies by Assyrians superimposed on the sounds of the environment they could hear from the bed.
