My work in the studio this year focused mainly on restoring a Japanese paper parasol from the late nineteenth century that featured a rich decoration printed on its canopy, inspired by Hiroshige (1797–1858). The canopy had undergone significant structural changes and the various parts of the opening mechanism had become disconnected. The treatment focused on restoring both the structural unity of the canopy’s paper support and the opening mechanism.
